Answers for quieter living

Start with what the sound is doing. Then ask what the proposed treatment can actually change.

Is sound absorption the same as sound insulation?

No. Absorption reduces reflections inside a room. Sound insulation limits transmission between spaces. A treatment can help one without meaningfully improving the other.

Will acoustic foam stop voices through a wall?

Thin foam usually changes room reflections rather than the separating wall's transmission. Investigate gaps, wall construction and flanking paths before choosing a lining system.

Is a heavier door enough?

Not by itself. The frame, seals, threshold and installation all matter. Changes must also preserve required fire safety, accessibility and ventilation.

Can a rug reduce footsteps downstairs?

A rug may soften contact and reduce some impact sound. It does not establish compliance or resolve every low-frequency thump transmitted by the structure.

Why is bass still audible after adding panels?

Thin absorbers often have limited low-frequency effect. Bass may involve room modes, structural transmission or weak low-frequency insulation, each requiring a different response.

Can I block a noisy ventilation grille?

Do not block required ventilation. Ask a competent designer about an appropriate attenuated air path that preserves airflow and other safety requirements.

Does a laboratory rating predict my finished room?

Not on its own. Laboratory evidence concerns a particular assembly. Installed performance also depends on workmanship, junctions, room conditions and flanking routes.

Can my phone measure sound insulation?

A phone can help record observations, but ordinary apps do not replace calibrated equipment, controlled procedures and competent interpretation for formal insulation assessment.

When should I involve an acoustician?

Seek advice before major construction, when low-frequency or flanking paths are unclear, or when regulatory compliance, a dispute or a measurable performance target is involved.

Turn a question into a brief

Note the source, receiving room and time pattern. Describe the activity affected rather than guessing a product. Our local message tool helps organise those observations without sending them.
